We investigated the effect of a decrease in blood viscosity on the mean BP during isovolumic hemodilution and vasodilating activity of the endothelium in normotensive Wistar rats and spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). Blood viscosity was reduced by isovolumic hemodilution (replacement of 10% of circulating blood with an equal volume of plasma). Hemodilution caused the same reduction in blood viscosity by 16% in both groups of rats. In Wistar rats, a decrease in blood viscosity did not significantly change in the mean BP; no significant correlations between blood viscosity and mean BP were observed before and after hemodilution. In SHR, a decrease in blood viscosity led to a significant decrease in the mean BP by 18%. Correlations were found between the mean BP and blood viscosity in SHR before (r=0.63; p=0.028) and after (r=0.71; p=0.009) isovolumic hemodilution. In SHR, a decrease in the index of vasodilating activity of the endothelium due to a decrease in the vasodilatory response to intravenous administration of the endothelium-dependent vasodilator acetylcholine was revealed. In SHR, BP passively follows the change, in this case, the decrease in blood viscosity, which attests to impaired BP regulation in response to changes in shear stress on the vascular endothelium caused by the development of endothelial dysfunction in hypertensive animals.

Multiple myeloma (MM) is considered to be one of the hematological malignancies formed by excessive and abnormal proliferation of plasmocytes. Among other parameters, several blood tests are used to diagnose multiple myeloma. The hemorheological profile in multiple myeloma is not widely studied. Hemorheology includes the study of measuring the deformability and aggregation of erythrocytes, blood viscosity, and sedimentation rate. The degree of deformability of blood cells is necessary to maintain proper vital functions. Proper deformability of red blood cells ensures proper blood circulation, tissue oxidation and carbon dioxide uptake. The aim of the study was to compare morphology and blood rheology parameters in patients with MM and healthy individuals. The study included 33 patients with MM, and 33 healthy subjects of the same age. The hematological blood parameters were evaluated using ABX MICROS 60 hematology analyzer. The LORCA Analyzer to study erythrocyte aggregation and deformability. Patients with MM had lower red blood cells count (RBC) (9.11%) (p < 0.001) and half time of total aggregation (T1/2) (94.29%) (p < 0.001) values and higher mean corpuscular volume (MCV) (5.50%) (p < 0.001), aggregation index (AI) (68.60%) (p < 0.001), total extent of aggregation (AMP) (87.92%) (p < 0.001) values than the healthy control group. Aggregation in patients with MM is different compared to healthy individuals. It was observed that the percentage of cell aggregation is almost 50% higher than in the control group. The study of morphology, aggregation and deformability of erythrocytes in patients with suspected MM may be helpful in making clinical decisions.

BACKGROUND: In the Fontan palliation for single ventricle heart disease (SVHD), pulmonary blood flow is non-pulsatile/passive, low velocity, and low shear, making viscous power loss a critical determinant of cardiac output. The rheologic properties of blood in SVHD patients are essential for understanding and modulating their limited cardiac output and they have not been systematically studied. We hypothesize that viscosity is decreased in single ventricle circulation. METHODS: We evaluated whole blood viscosity, red blood cell (RBC) aggregation, and RBC deformability to evaluate changes in healthy children and SVHD patients. We altered suspending media to understand cellular and plasma differences contributing to rheologic differences. RESULTS: Whole blood viscosity was similar between SVHD and healthy at their native hematocrits, while viscosity was lower at equivalent hematocrits for SVHD patients. RBC deformability is increased, and RBC aggregation is decreased in SVHD patients. Suspending SVHD RBCs in healthy plasma resulted in increased RBC aggregation and suspending healthy RBCs in SVHD plasma resulted in lower RBC aggregation. CONCLUSIONS: Hematocrit corrected blood viscosity is lower in SVHD vs. healthy due to decreased RBC aggregation and higher RBC deformability, a viscous adaptation of blood in patients whose cardiac output is dependent on minimizing viscous power loss. IMPACT: Patients with single ventricle circulation have decreased red blood cell aggregation and increased red blood cell deformability, both of which result in a decrease in blood viscosity across a large shear rate range. Since the unique Fontan circulation has very low-shear and low velocity flow in the pulmonary arteries, blood viscosity plays an increased role in vascular resistance, therefore this work is the first to describe a novel mechanism to target pulmonary vascular resistance as a modifiable risk factor. This is a novel, modifiable risk factor in this patient population.

Red blood cells (RBCs) are the simplest cell types with complex dynamical and viscoelastic phenomenology. While the mechanical rigidity and the flickering noise of RBCs have been extensively investigated, an accurate determination of the constitutive equations of the relaxational kinetics is lacking. Here we measure the force relaxation of RBCs under different types of tensional and compressive extension-jump protocols by attaching an optically trapped bead to the RBC membrane. Relaxational kinetics follows linear response from 60 pN (tensional) to -20 pN (compressive) applied forces, exhibiting a triple exponential function with three well-separated timescales over four decades (0.01-100 s). While the fast timescale (τF∼0.02(1)s) corresponds to the relaxation of the membrane, the intermediate and slow timescales (τI=4(1)s; τS=70(8)s) likely arise from the cortex dynamics and the cytosol viscosity. Relaxation is highly heterogeneous across the RBC population, yet the three relaxation times are correlated, showing dynamical scaling. Finally, we find that glucose depletion and laser illumination of RBCs lead to faster triple exponential kinetics and RBC rigidification. Viscoelastic phenotyping is a promising dynamical biomarker applicable to other cell types and active systems.

The pathogenesis of venous thromboembolism in multiple myeloma is still poorly understood because multiple factors are involved. In particular, the increase in whole blood viscosity has a key role and, therefore, we performed an evaluation of some hemorheological determinants in multiple myeloma patients, putting them in relation to the thrombotic risk, with the aim to evaluate if an alteration of the hemorheological pattern was associated with a higher thrombotic risk. We performed an observational retrospective cohort study with data collected from January 2017 to September 2022. In a group of 190 patients with newly diagnosed multiple myeloma, we have examined the trend of calculated blood viscosity according to the Merrill formula, and we stratified the patients for the thrombotic risk in accordance with the IMWG/NCCN guidelines and with IMPEDE VTE score. Using the thrombotic risk stratification proposed by IMWG/NCCN any variation in calculated blood viscosity is evident, while, with the IMPEDE VTE score, we observed an increase in calculated blood viscosity in patients with "intermediate + high" risk. The calculated blood viscosity is higher in subjects presenting an "intermediate + high" thrombotic risk according to the IMPEDE VTE score. This association could therefore lay the groundwork for further research with the aim to confirm the role of hemorheological pattern in MM-related thrombotic risk.

PURPOSE: This study aims to compare two surgical techniques, the standard Vein-to-Artery and the newer Artery-to-Vein (Radial Artery Deviation And Reimplantation; RADAR), for enhancing the success of Arterio-Venous Fistula maturation in end-stage renal disease patients. The impact of diseases like anemia, diabetes, hypertension, and chronic kidney disease were considered. The goals are to advance Arterio-Venous Fistula (AVF) surgery, improve patient outcomes, and contribute to evidence-based surgical guidelines. METHODS: Fluid-structure interaction modeling was employed to investigate how hemodynamic and mechanical stresses impact arteriovenous fistula maturation, with a particular focus on the role of wall shear stress in determining maturation outcomes. The critical threshold for vessel injury was identified as wall shear stress values exceeding 35 N/m2, while stenosis formation was projected to occur at levels below 1 N/m2. This work introduced a novel approach by considering disease-related factors, including blood viscosity (anemia), and vessel elasticity (diabetes, hypertension, and chronic kidney diseases), which directly influence hemodynamics and the generation of wall shear stress. Furthermore, the model was designed to incorporate varying thicknesses and elasticities for both the vein and artery, accurately representing authentic vascular anatomy. RESULTS: The RADAR technique has demonstrated superior performance compared to the standard technique by providing appropriate wall shear stress in critical regions and minimizing the risk of wall damage. Its use of a thicker vessel also reduces the risk of vessel injury, making it particularly effective for patients with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), hypertension, anemia, and diabetes, ensuring optimal blood flow and fewer complications. However, there are minor concerns about stenosis formation in hypertension and anemia cases, which could be mitigated by adjusting the anastomosis angle to be lower than 30°. CONCLUSION: Diabetes and hypertension have significant physiological effects that increase the risks associated with arteriovenous fistula maturation. The anemic condition resulting from CKD may help reduce vessel injury but raises concerns about potential stenosis formation. Despite these co-morbidities, the RADAR technique has demonstrated its ability to induce more favorable hemodynamic changes, promoting arteriovenous fistula maturation.

INTRODUCTION: This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the association between myocardial mechano-energetic efficiency (MEE) and whole blood viscosity (WBV) in nondiabetic adults participating in the CATAnzaro MEtabolic RIsk factors (CATAMERI) study. METHODS: 1143 participants underwent an oral glucose tolerance test and an echocardiogram for myocardial MEE per gram of left ventricular mass (MEEi) measurement. WBV was measured as: [0.12 × h] + [0.17 × (p-2.07)], where h is haematocrit and p is plasma protein levels. RESULTS: Study population includes 595 males and 548 females with a mean age of 46 ± 12 years and a mean BMI of 30.0 ± 6.2 kg/m2 . Individuals with normal glucose tolerance were 63%, while those with impaired fasting glucose, impaired glucose tolerance and or the combination of both were 14.3%, 13% and 9.7%, respectively. A univariate analysis showed that MEEi was significantly associated with sex, age, smoking, BMI, waist circumference, total cholesterol, HDL, triglycerides, fasting glucose, fasting insulin, HOMA-IR index, glucose tolerance, C-reactive protein, haematocrit, haemoglobin, plasma protein and WBV. In a multivariable regression model including variables that were significantly associated with MEEi in univariate analysis, MEEi was associated with HOMA-IR (ß = -0.144, p < .001), age (ß = -0.140, p < .001), WBV (ß = -0.129, p < .001) and glucose tolerance (ß = -0.064, p = .04). The independent association between WBV and MEEi remained statistically significant (ß = -0.122, p < .001) when antihypertensive therapy and lipid-lowering therapy were included in the model. CONCLUSION: WBV is associated with decreased myocardial MEE independently of other cardiovascular risk factors.

The size of body compartments is a determinant of several factors of blood viscosity. Red cell aggregation is proportional to fat mass while hematocrit is proportional to both fat-free mass and abdominal adiposity, but which parts of these body components are involved in this relationship is not known. Segmental bioelectrical impedance analysis (sBIA) provides a possibility to delineate the relationships more precisely between various subdivisions of the body and blood viscosity factors, going farther than preceding studies using non segmental BIA. In this study we investigated in 38 subjects undergoing a standardized breakfast test with mathematical modelling of glucose homeostasis and a segmental bioelectrical impedance analysis (sBIA) the relationships between the various compartments of the body and viscosity factors. Blood and plasma viscosity were measured with the Anton Paar rheometer and analyzed with Quemada's model. The parameters better correlated to hematocrit are fat free mass (r = 0.562) and its two components muscle mass (r = 0.516) and non-muscular fat-free mass (r = 0.452), and also trunk fat mass (r = 0.383) and waist-to hip ratio (r = 0.394). Red cell aggregation measurements were correlated with both truncal and appendicular fat mass (r ranging between 0.603 and 0.728). Weaker correlations of M and M1 are found with waist circumference and hip circumference. This study shows that the correlation between lean mass and hematocrit involves both muscle and non-muscle moieties of lean mass, and that both central and appendicular fat are determinants of red cell aggregation.

Many methods to computationally predict red blood cell damage have been introduced, and among these are Lagrangian methods that track the cells along their pathlines. Such methods typically do not explicitly include cell-cell interactions. Due to the high volume fraction of red blood cells (RBCs) in blood, these interactions could impact cell mechanics and thus the amount of damage caused by the flow. To investigate this question, cell-resolved simulations of red blood cells in shear flow were performed for multiple interacting cells, as well as for single cells in unbounded flow at an effective viscosity. Simulations run without adjusting the bulk viscosity produced larger errors unilaterally and were not considered further for comparison. We show that a periodic box containing at least 8 cells and a spherical harmonic of degree larger than 10 are necessary to produce converged higher-order statistics. The maximum difference between the single-cell and multiple-cell cases in terms of peak strain was 3.7%. To achieve this, one must use the whole blood viscosity and average over multiple cell orientations when adopting a single-cell simulation approach. The differences between the models in terms of average strain were slightly larger (maximum difference of 6.9%). However, given the accuracy of the single-cell approach in predicting the maximum strain, which is useful in hemolysis prediction, and its computational cost that is orders of magnitude less than the multiple-cell approach, one may use it as an affordable cell-resolved approach for hemolysis prediction.

Goldenberry (GB) is a promising fruit that can be a constituent in many possible nourishments. No notifications were obtained regarding the impact of exposure to goldenberry extract in the viewpoint of blood rheological properties as well as erythrocyte osmotic fragility of red blood cells (RBCs) in obese rats. A substantial reduction in plasma triglyceride, total cholesterol, and LDL, with a considerable increment in HDL levels relative to the obese group (p ≤ 0.05), was observed in rats receiving low and high doses of GB, accompanied by restoration of SOD activity and GSH levels. Rheological parameters of rats' blood have been studied over a wide range of shear rates (225-1875 s-1). A significant decrease in blood viscosity in rats who received low and high doses of GB extract was compatible with every shear rate compared to the control group. The shear stress values of the obese rats reduced appreciably (p ≤ 0.05) in all values of shear rate (from 75 to 500 s-1) proportional to the control group, while in the groups that received low and high doses of GB extract, shear stress was restored to the control values. Finally, administration of GB extract significantly decreased yield stress and indices of whole blood aggregation, with an extremely substantial increment in flow rate, in rats given low or high doses of GB compared to obese ones. The result also showed a decrease in both the average raised osmotic fragility and the hemolysis rate in rats after supplementation with low and high doses of GB extract.

Lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] has been confirmed as a causal risk factor of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, but its role on circulation is not completely clear and is still being explored. Therefore, this study attempts to explore the relationship between Lp(a) and whole blood reducing viscosity (WBRV), to better understand the role of Lp(a) in circulatory and cardiovascular diseases. We retrospectively analyzed the data of consecutive subjects in the physical examination center of the Affiliated Hospital of Ningbo University Medical College from January 2022 to May 2022. Pearson or spearman correlation analysis was used to test the statistical relationship between 2 continuous variables according to whether they are normal; 131 participants were retrospectively enrolled in this study. The low-density lipoprotein concentration was associated with whole blood viscosity at low-shear (R = 0.220, P = .012), middle-shear (R = 0.226, P = .01), and high-shear viscosity (R = 0.212, P = .015), as well as plasma viscosity (RS = 0.207, P = .018). Lp(a) was not associated with whole blood viscosity at low, middle, and high shear rates, but was associated with WBRV at low shear (RS = 0.204, P = .019) and middle shear rates (RS = 0.197, P = .024). Lp(a) is associated with high WBRV, which may impart more insights into the role of Lp(a) in cardiovascular disease.

Background and Objectives: Diabetes can cause various vascular complications. The Compounded Danshen-Dripping-Pill (CDDP) is widely used in China. This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness and safety of CDDP in the blood viscosity (BV) with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Materials and Methods: We conducted a systematic search of seven databases from their inception to July 2022 for randomized controlled trials that used CDDP to treat T2DM. To evaluate BV, we measured low shear rate (LSR), high shear rate (HSR), and plasma viscosity (PV). Homocysteine and adiponectin levels were also assessed as factors that could affect BV. Results: We included 18 studies and 1532 patients with T2DM. Meta-analysis revealed that CDDP significantly reduced LSR (mean difference [MD] -2.74, 95% confidence interval [CI] -3.77 to -1.72), HSR (MD -0.86, 95% CI -1.08 to -0.63), and PV (MD -0.37, 95% CI -0.54 to -0.19) compared to controls. CDDP also reduced homocysteine (MD -8.32, 95% CI -9.05 to -7.58), and increased plasma adiponectin (MD 2.72, 95% CI 2.13 to 3.32). Adverse events were reported less frequently in the treatment groups than in controls. Conclusions: CDDP is effective in reducing BV on T2DM. However, due to the poor design and quality of the included studies, high-quality, well-designed studies are required in the future.

As per American Society of Apheresis (ASFA) guidelines, the indication for Erythrocytapheresis for sickle cell patients is category III for preoperative management and vaso-occlusive crisis. Erythrocytapheresis, with the help of automated cell separators, has the benefit of reducing the Sickle hemoglobin (HbS) levels to <30.0% with a reduced risk of increasing blood viscosity and single procedure achieving target hemoglobin levels. A 17-year-oldfemale patient who was a known case of sickle cell disease presented to our institution with a vascular necrosis of the right femoral head. Due to the pain and limitations of her day-to-day activities, she was advised for total hip arthroplasty. This patient underwent a successful Erythrocytapheresis using an automated cell separator and was operated on. In a sickle cell patient planned for surgical intervention, the procedure of Erythrocytapheresis can help in decreasing the chances of the patient developing any vaso-occlusive crisis during surgery and in the immediate post-operative period. This technique can help in improving the chances of a successful surgical procedure for such patients.

Sickle cell anaemia (SCA) is a monogenic disease with a highly variable clinical course. We aimed to investigate associations between microvascular function, haemolysis markers, blood viscosity and various types of SCA-related organ damage in a multicentric sub-Saharan African cohort of patients with SCA. In a cross-sectional study, we selected seven groups of adult patients with SS phenotype in Dakar and Bamako based on the following complications: leg ulcer, priapism, osteonecrosis, retinopathy, high tricuspid regurgitant jet velocity (TRV), macro-albuminuria or none. Clinical assessment, echocardiography, peripheral arterial tonometry, laboratory tests and blood viscosity measurement were performed. We explored statistical associations between the biological parameters and the six studied complications. Among 235 patients, 58 had high TRV, 46 osteonecrosis, 43 priapism, 33 leg ulcers, 31 retinopathy and 22 macroalbuminuria, whereas 36 had none of these complications. Multiple correspondence analysis revealed no cluster of complications. Lactate dehydrogenase levels were associated with high TRV, and blood viscosity was associated with retinopathy and the absence of macroalbuminuria. Despite extensive phenotyping of patients, no specific pattern of SCA-related complications was identified. New biomarkers are needed to predict SCA clinical expression to adapt patient management, especially in Africa, where healthcare resources are scarce.

INTRODUCTION: Plasma exchange therapy (PE) is useful for patients with primary macroglobulinemia and multiple myeloma who present with hyperviscosity syndrome. However, hyperviscous blood may coagulate in the circuit during treatment, and in that case necessitate discontinuation of the treatment. This time, we report that we were able to prevent coagulation in the circuit by adding some ideas during the membrane separation method. METHODS: Physiological saline is injected in front of the plasma separation membrane to pre-dilute the blood, followed by filtration through the plasma separation membrane. RESULTS: As a result of pre-diluting with physiological saline to reduce the viscosity entering the separation membrane, it was possible to process the planned target amount. CONCLUSION: In patients with hyperviscosity syndrome who showed intracircuit coagulation during plasma exchange therapy, devising a predilution method should be considered as one of the ways to continue treatment.

INTRODUCTION: The resonant properties of mechanical resonators provide valuable parameters for liquids density and viscosity measurement. The viscosity of liquids in industry and medicine has always been of interest to researchers. METHODS: In this paper, a viscosity sensor is designed and fabricated for liquids based on mechanical resonator and electromagnetic actuators. In this proposed sensor, a coil is used to monitor the output of this sensor. RESULTS: This sensor is proposed to measure the blood viscosity, while its results for some people blood viscosity is reported and verified. CONCLUSION: The exact design of the proposed sensor and its experimental results are presented using a prototype for some liquids that indicate the sensor precision.

BACKGROUND: Increased whole blood viscosity (WBV) is associated with increased infarct area, impaired microvascular circulation and mortality in patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). OBJECTIVES: We aimed to analyze the association between the WBV and thrombus burden (TB) in STEMI patients. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 167 STEMI patients who received primary percutaneous coronary intervention. WBV values were assessed using hematocrit and total protein values, and low shear rate(LSR) and high shear rate(HSR) were calculated. Angiographic TB was assessed according to the definition of the Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction (TIMI) study group. The cases were dichotomized into low TB (grade 1-3) (n = 87) and high TB (grade 4-5) (n = 80) groups. RESULTS: The mean HSR and LSR values of the high TB group were significantly increased compared to the low TB group (p < 0.001, for each). In ROC analysis,for prediction of TB, a cut-off value of 3.83 WBV for HSR had a 71% sensitivity and a 60.7% specificity, and a cut-off value of 21 WBV for LSR had a 70% sensitivity and 59.9% specificity (p < 0.001,for each). Multivariate regression analysis showed that both HSR (OR = 2.408;p=0.020) and LSR (OR = 1.055;p=0.021) were independent predictors for high TB. CONCLUSION: Increased WBV was an independent predictor for the presence of high TB in patients with STEMI.

BACKGROUND: Acute mesenteric ischemia is a serious condition with high mortality rate, resulting internal organ damage and intestinal necrosis due to sudden occlusion in the arteries feeding the abdominal solid organs and intestines. The most common causes of acute mesenteric artery ischemia are embolic processes and thrombosis that develops on the basis of primary mesenteric artery atherosclerosis. Whole blood viscosity (WBV) was defined by De Simon and could be calculated with a formula that consists of total plasma protein and hematocrit (HCT). In our study, we aimed to investigate the predictive value of WBV for acute mesenteric ischemia caused by primary mesenteric artery occlusion. METHODS: Between January 2015 and February 2021, a total of 55 patients with a retrospective diagnosis of acute mesenteric ischemia (AMI) and 50 healthy volunteers as a control group were included in the study. WBV was calculated with the De Simon for-mula using the HCT and plasma protein levels from the blood tests of healthy volunteers and patients at the time of admission with acute abdomen. RESULTS: No significant differences between the two groups in terms of baseline demographic characteristics except the preva-lence of age (72.1±12.4 vs. 65.7±6.4; p<0.001) and hypertension (40% vs. 23% p=0.002). AMI patients had significantly higher WBV values both at low shear rate (LSR) ([46.3±21.7 vs. 33.4±±13.1, p<0.001] and high shear rate [HSR] [16.5±11 vs. 15.8±0.7, p<0.001]). The univariate analysis identified several variables for predicting AMI including age (odds ratio [OR]: 1.066 confidence interval [CI]: 1.023-1.111, p=0.003), hypertension (OR: 3.612 CI: 1.564-8.343, p=0.003), WBV at HSR (OR: 2.074 CI: 1.193-3.278, p=0.002), and WBV at LSR (OR: 2.156 CI: 1.331-3.492, p=0.002). However, after multivariate analysis, only hypertension (OR: 3.537 CI: 1.298-9.639, p=0.014) and age (OR: 1.085 CI: 1.026-1.147, p=0.004) showed significance. In receiver operating characteristic analysis, a cut-off value of 43.5 WBV for LSR had a 72% sensitivity and a 70% specificity for prediction of mesenteric ischemia patients (area under curve [AUC]: 0.743, p<0.001) and a cut-off value of 16.29 WBV for HSR had a 78% sensitivity and 76% specificity for prediction of mesen-teric ischemia patients (AUC: 0.773, p<0.001). CONCLUSION: In our study, we determined that the WBV value obtained with the De Simon formula is a valuable parameter in predicting the development of acute mesenteric artery ischemia caused by primary mesenteric artery occlusion.

Hemodynamics play a vital role for the risk of thrombosis in the left atrial appendage (LAA) and left atrium (LA) for patients with atrial fibrillation. Accurate prediction of hemodynamics in the LA can provide important guidance for assessing the risk of thrombosis in the LAA. Patient specificity is a crucial factor in representing the true hemodynamic fields. In this study, we investigated the effects of blood rheology (as a function of hematocrit and shear rate), as well as patient-specific mitral valve (MV) boundary conditions (MV area and velocity profiles measured by ultrasound) on the hemodynamics and thrombosis potential of the LAA. Four scenarios were setup with different degrees of patient specificity. Though using a constant blood viscosity can classify the thrombus and non-thrombus patients for all the hemodynamic indicators, the risk of thrombosis was underestimated for all patients compared with patient-specific viscosities. The results with least patient specificities showed that patients prone to thrombosis predicted by three hemodynamic indicators were inconsistent with clinical observations. Moreover, though patients had the same MV inlet flow rate, different MV models lead to different trends in the risk of thrombosis in different patients. We also found that endothelial cell activation potential and relative residence time can effectively distinguish thrombus and non-thrombus patients for all the scenarios, relatively insensitive to patient specificities. Overall, the findings of this study provide useful insights on patients-specific hemodynamic simulations of the LA.

BACKGROUND: Yielding and shear elasticity of blood are merely discussed within the context of hematocrit and erythrocyte aggregation. However, plasma might play a substantial role due its own viscoelasticity. OBJECTIVE: If only erythrocyte aggregation and hematocrit would determine yielding, blood of different species with comparable values would present comparable yield stresses. METHODS: rheometry (SAOS: amplitude and frequency sweep tests; flow curves) of hematocrit-matched samples at 37°C. Brillouin Light Scattering Spectroscopy at 38°C. RESULTS: Yield stress for pig: 20mPa, rat: 18mPa, and human blood: 9mPa. Cow and sheep blood were not in quasi-stationary state supporting the role of erythrocyte aggregation for the development of elasticity and yielding. However, pig and human erythrocytes feature similar aggregability, but yield stress of porcine blood was double. Murine and ruminant erythrocytes both rarely aggregate, but their blood behavior was fundamentally different. Pig plasma was shear-thinning and murine plasma was platelet-enriched, supporting the role of plasma for triggering collective effects and gel-like properties. CONCLUSIONS: Blood behavior near zero shear flow is not based solely on erythrocyte aggregation and hematocrit, but includes the hydrodynamic interaction with plasma. The shear stress required to break down elasticity is not the critical shear stress for dispersing erythrocyte aggregates, but the shear stress required to fracture the entire assembly of blood cells within their intimate embedding.
